PLAY A POEM FOR THE EARTH

Take off your shoes& socks
Put them in the grass
Move your fingers through the strands
Come to the center
Spread your toes
Wide
Make yourself a tall tree
Notice
The wind moving between you
Feel
Eyes around you
Blinking
Reach out your hand
And move to touch someone's shoulder
Rest
Your whole arm heavy
Your heartbeat
Slows down
Help each other
To turn round
Until everyone is facing south
Look toward the horizon
Where the sun rises
Imagine it rising
Look at the sky's color
Arc your neck with the day's time
Until the sun is on your face
If it's too bright for your eyes
Reach up& shade yourself
Trace this path
Until the sun sets at the other horizon
Notice the color of this western sky
Follow the sun
All the way around the Earth
Until tomorrow morning
Go find someone
Who's sitting or standing
Beside watching
Invite this person to join you
Come back to the center
Find your shadow
Chase it
Flatten it
Fatten it
Stretch it
Scrunch it
All the shadows
Magnetic
Find each other
And they grow into a shape
Quickly change into another shape
Stay still
Until the outside temeprature
Permeates
Through from your skin to your bones
Awake, stretch
Stand up tall
Turn around until
You catch someone’s eyes
Move closer to this person
Until you sense
Their body heat
Stare
Until your assumptions
Disappear
Break your stare
Turn around again
Reach out
And take another person's hands
When you have a firm grasp
Spin together
Over and over
In any direction
Gradually slow
And with care
Let go
Make space around you
Stand
In silence
Close your eyes
Listen
To sounds far at the other side of the park
Trees nearby
Wind tapping leaves
Bark creaking
Roots reaching for water
Listen to
Earthworms excavating
Butterfly wings
Birds leaping
Now
Imagine all those sounds merging
Becoming the insides of your ears
Becoming your breath
Becoming as fast as
Blood circulating
With your body
Show us blood circulating
Shake
Pulse
Glide
Turn a corner
With your arms in front of you
Move until you are squarely

In line with someone's body
Clasp hands
Fall forward
Chins resting on each other's shoulders
Hands let go and arms mingle
Rest
Breathe in deeply
Take in the smell of this person
Make a memory
Gently push away
Turn around
Alone
Spinning
Move toward the center
Cluster
Closer
Until there is no space between you
Closer still
Take two breaths together
Explode
Turn around
Outward to the edges
Go find your
Socks
And shoes
Smell the grass
